                Special Assignments

Throughout the year students will be asked to perform special assignments that are in addition to their weekly homework.  Many of these assignments help the students with the Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards.

Each student will get to be the "Star Student" once during our school year. Students  are randomly chosen starting in November.  The posters are sent home a week in advance of their turn.  During this week we will get to know your child better. Your student will be asked to do the following:

Monday:  Bring in the poster that they have colored and decorated.

Tuesday: Bring in their favorite book to share.

Wednesday: Bring in 2 of their favorite toys, trophies, collection items, etc.  to show and share with the class.

Thursday and Friday open to leave flexibility in case the student has forgotten to bring in an item, if we run out of time, or if there is a holiday.

Each student will bring home the Mystery Box.  This is a guessing game the children love to play.  It teaches them how to ask questions about attributes, creates vocabulary and teaches them reasoning skills.

Please have your child choose one item to put in the Mystery Box.  In addition, help your child formulate three clues that describe the item (for example...1.  It is soft  2.  It is blue.  3.   It smells good.) without giving away what the object is. Then write the clues on a slip on paper.

At school, your child will give these clues one at a time and the other children will ask three 'yes or no' questions to try to solve the mystery in the box.  After all clues have been given there will be three chances to guess what is in the box.  Remind your child that the item is a surprise...it’s no fun if the first person called on tells us what is in the box. Once the item is identified, your child will have an opportunity to tell us about it.  A little preparation at home will help your child get the most out of this language development activity.

CLASS MASCOT

??????????????????????????????????

This is Owliver, our class mascot.  He spends his days in our class laughing and learning.  On the weekend he likes to visit with the students.  When Owliver visits your home please take good care of him.  We will all be looking forward to hearing about your adventures with Owliver.

Please have your child draw a picture of something they did with Owliver. The paper will be in the carrier that Owliver is sent home in.

Ideally, I would like your child to write a sentence about the picture.  If your child can do this by themselves or with assistance that is wonderful, but if not, please have your child tell you the sentence and you can write it.   Your child will have an opportunity on Monday to share about their adventures with Owliver.

Below is an example of what I am looking for.  I am not looking for perfection...I am looking for work that your child is able to do on their own.
